Space allocation Goals Screen Size Floor plan Acoustics Wiring Electronics Furnishings
1) The Space; We start here because without the space we have no theater. Are you building new, remodeling or using existing space. Each one has issues that must be dealt with. As you go through the others the importance of selecting the right space becomes clearer. Avoid quadrate rooms, rooms that are open to the main house and rooms with large amounts of ambient Light.
2) The Budget: Of course without the money nothing can begin. It is important to set this whole in stone. It becomes very easy to add a few here and there. Next thing you know you're over allocation and can't end your theater. Stay on top of this one, big. Got it?
3) The Goals: How do you envision the space? Only movies? Movies and music? Video gaming? Maybe Tv? And also a quiet reading room. Write them down. Put all your wishes down. Place them in the order of importance.
4) Screen Size: There are a join of basics I can give you as a guide. To know the length required from the screen to the seating will be a great help. Use a multiplier of screen diagonal times 1.41. Example 100" diagonal screen or 100 x 1.41= 141" from the screen to the seating. Remember this is a minimum length for high definition material. This will at least give you a guide.
5) The Floor Plan: Lay out the room on paper. Even if just a sketch. Collect real world measurements of the items you would like and plan your room. A join of quick rules to follow; try and keep seating at least 2' from all walls, never in a corner. If you plan on manifold rows a 1' riser height will serve you well. Platforms should be a minimum of 8' deep.
6) The Acoustics: A hometheater can be a very loud place at times. It is best to plan for sound containment and sound control. Containment refers to keeping the sound in the room. Operate refers to the interior sound capability of the room. There are many options and price points. important points to remember are density and isolation for containment and absorption and reflection for control.
7) Wiring: Make a detailed wiring plan for the theater. Layout speaker and subwoofer placement. Plan your equipment location. Do not forget electrical Power where necessary. Wall mounted Tv's need electrical. It is marvelous at how often habitancy don't think of that. If you're doing it yourself make sure to check the manufacturers requirements.
8) Electronics: Do your investigate to be sure you are getting the best bang for your buck. There is much good data ready but beware there is just as much bad data out there. It's hard to know who to trust. Who has the knowledge? There are some good reviews but be aware that the products reviewed are usually from advertisers in the publication. Sufficient said about that. The best way to judge is to see and hear for yourself. Go home and do investigate on those products and gently build your specification. Buying all at once may be the best deal or maybe shopping unavoidable items individually may be the best. Remember your budget. Save some here gives you more to spend there. Do not skimp on speakers. They are the voice of your HomeTheater room.
9) Furnishings: What's a theater room without theater chairs? There are many styles and price points to pick from. Explore, experiment, just try and remember the tips I gave you in floor plan and have fun making your theater room in to your Theater Room.
